He rose to international fame with his role as Matthew Crawley in the ITV period drama Downton Abbey from 2010 to 2012. In the first episode he plays Matthew, a distant cousin of the Crawley family who inherits the property and soon moves into Downton Abbey. In the show, he tries to reconcile Downton Abbey’s aristocratic culture with his middle-class background.
In 2021, he played the role of robot Tom in the German science fiction romantic film “I’m your man”. Archaeologist Dr. Alma Felser arrives at the dance club and is introduced to Tom by the staff. Alma then tests Tom with difficult math questions and trivia about his favorite poems, which he struggles to answer.
Stevens starred as the Beast and the Prince in Disney’s 2017 live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. It tells about a poor prince who is transformed into an ugly monster to punish his evil and selfish behavior. In order for the monster to return to his old self, he must win the heart of Belle, the cute girl he imprisoned in the castle.
In 2022, he played John Dean in the American political thriller TV miniseries Gaslit (eight episodes total).
