Gonzalez began his career as a correspondent for newsweek magazine based in Detroit/Miami/New York. He worked as a correspondent from 1983-1990.
David joined The New York Times in 1990 as a reporter where he covered stories around New York City and the larger social and cultural issues in American society. Then he moved to Times foreign desk from 1999 to 2003 to serve as their Caribbean and Central American Bureau Chief, based in Miami.
His area of covering news spanned from Belize to Panama and included all the islands of the Caribbean which is a region of some three dozen countries. From 2004 to 2008, he served as the Times citywide columnist where he would analyze social and cultural themes.
Gonzalez started his photography career way back in 1979. David has served as the project coordinator for “El Foco”, a Latino photographic collective that was an early and vigorous advocate for minority artists. Furthermore, he has shot many of the photos which accompanied his stories in news coverage.
