Hisaishi Joe created the music for the 1974 animated series Gyatoruzu and some of his early works. He also wrote the music for “Futari Daka” (A Full Throttle) and “Sasuga no Sarutobi” (Ninja Academy).

Hisaishi’s work is influenced by Japanese pop, electronic music, and new age, including 1970s Japanese electronic band Yellow Magic Orchestra. He started with minimalist ideas and then progressed towards symphonic works. He gave his first public performance around 1975. His debut album “MKWAJU” was released in 1981, and was followed by his second album “Electronic Pop Minimalist Message” a year later. Hajime Ningen Gyatoruz (1974) and Robokko Beeton (1976) were his first major animated works.

As his fame grew, Hisaishi received a nickname from American musician and songwriter Quincy Jones: “Quincy” was said to be “Kuinsh” in Japanese, which can be written using the same kanji. “Hisaishi” is derived from “Joe” and “Jones”.
