Avey started off her scientific career at the University of California as a staff research associate. In 1985 she began venturing into various sales and business development in the fields of biopharmaceutical and academic research.

As of 2003 to 2005, she served for Perlegen Sciences and as well coordinated the world’s first genome-wide association studies Later from 2005 to 2006, Avey worked for Affymetrix on the translational medicine team. Her work was identifying genetic markers for diagnostic tests.

Avey later founded 23andMe in March 2006 along with Anne Wojcicki, and Paul Cusenza. 23andMe bieng the world’s first personal genetics service company. The company provides a direct-to-consumer genetic testing service and customers provide a saliva sample that is laboratory analyzed to produce reports relating to the customer’s ancestry as well as genetic predispositions to health-related topics.

23andMe got to be the first company to begin offering autosomal DNA testing for ancestry back in 2003 and it go to be named the “Invention of the Year” by Time magazine in 2008.
