She began her career in CBS News as a reporter based in the Atlanta office (1977-1980), where her assignments included a Cuban ship lift to the United States, a war in El Salvador and an exile from the Shah of Iran to Panama. While in Atlanta, Teichner experienced a three-month strike by coal miners in 1978 and several natural disasters.

Teichner has reported the Maze Prison Hunger Strike in Northern Ireland, the Lebanon War, the First Intifada in Israel and the West Bank in 1988, and the conflicts associated with the fall of Yugoslavia (Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia)
She covered the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe and the Romanian revolution. Teichner has also spent several weeks in the Bolivian jungle, reporting undercover operations with the Drug Enforcement Agency. In addition to Beirut, Teichner also spent time in Damascus.
