Opal Lee an American retired teacher, counselor, and activist with the aim to make Juneteenth a federally-recognized holiday. She is well known as the “grandmother of Juneteenth”. She arned the 2021 “Texan of the Year” by The Dallas Morning News for her activism on behalf of Black Texans. Terrell High School, Fort Worth’s first black school, graduated in 1943 at the age of 16. Lee then went to North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) where he earned a Masters in Counseling and Teaching. After earning his degree, Lee returned to Fort Worth and worked for the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) for 15 years and as a home school counselor for 9 years before retiring in 1977.

In 1967, she married Dale Lee, who was then a teacher at McCoy Elementary School, and Dale Lee was the principal of Morningside Elementary. After earning his degree, Lee returned to Fort Worth and worked for the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) for 15 years and as a home school counselor for 9 years before retiring in 1977.

He helped organize Fort Worth’s annual Juneteenth celebrations. Lee helped campaign for Texas gubernatorial candidate Ann Richards and presidential candidate Barack Obama.

In the 1980s, Lee started a tradition of annual bus tours among Fort Worth city officials to Fort Worth hotspots and showed Fort Worth landmarks. Its nonprofit Unity Unlimited Inc.
