Trey Hendrickson, seeking long-term deal, requests trade with Bengal

Bengals linebacker Trey Hendrickson’s agent, Harold Lewis, confirmed to ESPN that he requested a trade on Wednesday.

Lewis told ESPN that Hendrickson’s request was related to the team’s long-term investment after the two sides agreed to a suspension a year ago.

“Our goal is no. If we can’t do that, we’ll ask for a job. Hopefully, if he gets traded, we’ll do that too; get a long-term deal somewhere else.”

Last year, Hendrickson received a one-year contract extension worth $21 million, which included an $8 million signing bonus, according to Roster Management Systems. After a season as one of the best defensive tackles on the team, Hendrickson wants to get paid again.

Lewis said he and Hendrickson met with the Bengals for two hours in March to discuss a potential trade. Hendrickson’s agent said the team is willing to discuss a new contract next year and his current contract runs until 2025. During the meeting, the Bengals said they were not interested in the Hendrickson job.

A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Cincinnati is not interested in trading Hendrickson.

Hendrickson is the second star traded by the Bengals this summer. Wide receiver Tee Higgins, who received a franchise card from the team, requested a trade in March. However, Higgins said earlier this month that he expects to play for the Bengals this season.

Lewis said Hendrickson did not expect to be the highest-paid player of his career and found success during his time with the Bengals. In addition to his on-field numbers, Hendrickson is still playing due to a broken ankle he suffered late in the 2022 season. Although initial predictions had him sidelined for four weeks, he only missed one. That season, Cincinnati defended its AFC North title and went to the AFC Championship Game for the second straight year, losing to Kansas City.

“I have great respect for this organization,” Lewis said. “[Vice President] Troy Blackburn is a great guy and runs a family business there. But every player wants to be safe. They want to know they will be there for a while. This is a crazy game.
