He played college football at the University of Mississippi and the University of Florida and was drafted by the Rams in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers.

In 2015, Van played his freshman season at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). As a redshirt freshman in 2016, he caught 49 passes for 543 yards and three touchdowns.

Van finished his redshirt sophomore season with 42 catches for 456 yards and 1 touchdown. He announced his intention to transfer from Ole Miss after the program received NCAA approval following the 2017 season, ultimately choosing to continue his college career at Florida State.

Immediately eligible to play at Florida State after receiving waivers from the NCAA and Southeastern Conference (SEC).

In 2018, his first season with the Gators, he led the team with 35 receptions, 503 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns.
