Clark Hunt Biography

Clark Hunt is a well-known part owner, chairman, and CEO of the National Football League’s Kansas City Chiefs. Also, he is a founding investor-owner in Major League Soccer. He is the chairman of Hunt Sports Group where he oversees the operations of the Chiefs, FC Dallas, and formerly the Columbus Crew of MLS.

In 2006, he, his mother, and siblings inherited legal ownership of the Chiefs following the death of his father. However, as CEO and chairman, he is the public face of the ownership group and operating head of the franchise representing the Chiefs at all owner’s meetings. Before his mother’s death in 2023, Clark owned a 20.5% share of the franchise. Under his leadership, the Chiefs have made the playoffs nine times, won the AFC West eight times (seven consecutive), and appeared in three Super Bowls winning two.

Clark Hunt Major League Soccer and Wizards

One of the driving forces behind the creation of Major League Soccer, Hunt helped his father run the Kansas City Wizards until the team was sold in 2006. He remains a member of the league’s board of governors and owns the MLS club, FC Dallas. Previously, he owned the Columbus Crew until 2013.

Clark Hunt Start with the Kansas City Chiefs

In 2005, he was named chairman of the Kansas City Chiefs. Following the death of his father in 2006, he, his sister, and two brothers inherited ownership of the Chiefs. However, Clark is the operating head of the franchise and he thus represents the Chiefs at owners’ meetings and has the final say on personnel changes. In the 2007 season final after the Chiefs’ loss to the New York Mets, Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson announced that both himself and head coach Herm Edwards would return to the Chiefs in 2008.

But Hunt declined to immediately comment on Peterson’s status. Hunt announced on December 15, 2008, the resignation of Peterson from his positions as general manager, president, and CEO of the franchise effective the end of the season. Also, he said that the fate of head coach Herm Edwards would be settled after the season when a new general manager would be hired.

Clark Hunt Columbus Crew

Columbus Crew won their first MLS Cup championship under Hunt on November 23, 2008. In 2013, Hunt Sports Group sold the Columbus Crew to Precourt Sports Ventures, led by Anthony Precourt.

Clark Hunt’s First Chiefs Appointment

He hired New England Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli on January 13, 2009, as the new Chiefs general manager. On January 23, the Chiefs fired head coach Herman Edwards and his replacement was Todd Haley hired on February 6.

Clark Hunt Chiefs Seasons (2009-2012)

Haley’s first season did not go well but did a lot better in his second season. On December 12, 2011, Haley was fired by Hunt, after the Chiefs had compiled a 5-8 record during the 2011 NFL season. Even though the team won the AFC West the year before, Haley was replaced by Romeo Crennel mid-season. Crennel finished his stint as interim head coach with a 2-1 record. These included a win over the previously undefeated and defending Super Bowl Champions (2011 Green Bay Packers season). Hunt then named Creenl as the team’s permanent coach on January 9, 2012. Following the disastrous 2012 season, Hunt fired both general manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel.

Clark Hunt Andy Reid and John Dorsey hirings

The Philadelphia Eagles decided not to renew head coach Andy Reid’s contract after a 4-12, the worst of his 14-year tenure. Andy went on to be hired by Hunt on January 4, 2013, to a 5-year contract, on January 13, 2013, Huunt hired John Dorsey as general manager. Prior to this, John had no general manager experience but was the Director of Football Operations for the Green Bay Packers. Also, he had worked as a scout in Green Bay. Reid and Dorsey both worked for the Pacers from 1992 to 1998.

Clark Hunt Chiefs Return to Success

The Chiefs bounced back in 2013 and finished 11-5, making the playoffs but losing to the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the playoffs. The following year, the Chiefs failed to make the playoffs but did still finish the 2014 season with a winning record of 9-7. In Reid’s third year in 2015, the Chiefs improved on their 9-7 record and finished the 2015 season with an 11-5 record. That year saw the Chiefs win their first playoff game in Hunt’s tenure and the first of the franchise since 1993 when they defeated the Houston Texans.
