Dustin Lance Black is an American screenwriter, film and television producer, director, and LGBT activist. He is a founding member of the American Equal Rights Foundation and author of “8,” a staged reenactment of the federal court case that resulted in California’s Proposition 8 being overturned by federal courts.

Black wrote and directed the 2000 romance film The Journey of Jared Price and the coming-of-age short film Something Close to Heaven. In 2001 he directed and starred in the documentary On the Bus, about his adventures at Burning Man with his six men traveling through Nevada. He was hired as the sole Mormon writer for the HBO drama series Big Love, about a polygamous family. He started as staff writer for season 1, executive story editor for season 2, and wrote all three seasons before being named co-producer for season 3. Black starred as himself in the documentary Hollywood to Dollywood (originally released in 2011).
