Gale Sayers Biography

Gale Eugene Sayers was born on May 30, 1943 in Wichita, Kansas. The second of Bernice and Roger’s three children, Sayers moved to Speed, Kansas before settling in Omaha, Nebraska. He excelled in football and track and field at Omaha Central High and set the state record in the long jump with a jump of 24 feet 11 3/4 inches.

Sayers went on to play football for the University of Kansas, where he was a two-time All-American as a defensive lineman and a fullback. As a teenager, he set an NCAA Division I record with 99 fast yards against Nebraska, and the following year, his 96-yard kickoff return caused a upset against Oklahoma..
