From 1982 to 1984, Peel worked as a freelance journalist for the West German Press Agency in Portugal. From 1989 to 1993 Peel worked at the WDR studio in Bonn as a commercial and financial law radio station. She then served for a year as a radio committee member responsible for business, agriculture, environment and transportation.

In 1994 Monica was appointed radio director and became president of WDR 2. She was president of station WDR from late 1997 to 2007, and from 2001 to 2003 she headed the ARD Radio Commission.

On 1 April 2007, she became the new Director of WDR, replacing Fritz Pletgen. When he was elected by the Board of Directors, he received 38 votes, two for and two for. Peel remained unopposed after two candidates – ZDF editor-in-chief Nikolaus Brender and NDR judge Werner Hahn – withdrew.
