She started her career as a teacher but switched to journalism as a columnist in 1987 and since 2008, has been the editor of Shillong Times, the first English-language daily in Meghalaya. Mukhim was the former Member District Consumer Protection Forum, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya. Mukhim is a former member of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB). She is credited with several articles on the socio-political climate of Meghalaya.
