Something for Kate formed in Melbourne, Australia in mid-1994, six months after Dempsey graduated from the University of Padua, with fellow student drummer Clint Hindman. They placed an ad in a local record store and quickly found Julian Carroll as their bassist.

Originally known as Fish of the Day, the band changed their name after a performance at The Panters Club where Dempsey’s Jack Russell dog Kate was a major influence. After playing two gigs, they released a demo tape in 1995. A&R agent Chris Dunn signed her to Sony subsidiary Marmar Records in early 1996. All members were 19 years old at the time. Between 1996 and 2007, the band released five studio albums, four of which entered the ARIA Top 10. The band announced their split in 2007.
