Richard Smallwood Biography

Richard Smallwood an American multiple award-winning Gospel Composer, Music Director, Pianist and Arranger known as the Founder of ‘The Richard Smallwood Singers’ in 1977 based in Washington, D.C. He is as well known for his hit songs “Look Up And Live”, “Give Us Peace” and “psalms”. He was nominated for popular albums such as “Psalms”, “Healing” and “Persuaded”, among others.

The recording career of Smallwood started in 1982 with the album The Richard Smallwood Singers. The song spent 87 weeks on the Billboard Gospel 200. The follow-up, Psalms was nominated for Grammy. Two years later, the album Textures was nominated. Textures produced the now-classical “Center Of My Joy” composed by Richard Smallwood including Bill and Gloria Gaither.

He received his first Grammy, along with the Dove Award for his production of the Quincy Jones Gospel Project, Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration. Richard, with his former Vision band, has recorded a number of successful Verity Records projects. He earned his Master’s degree in Divinity from Howard University in 2004 and joined the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

Smallwood’s next venture was recorded live at the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center in New York City. The show includes guests Kim Burrell on “Journey,” Kelly Price on “Morning’s Broken,” Chaka Khan on “Precious Is Your Name,” and The Hawkins Family, Tramaine Hawkins
