Mills is know to have played college basketball for the Princeton Tigers, under the tutelage of coach Pete Carril as of 1978 to 1981. Mills averaged 12.0 points and 1.5 steals during his senior season.
He went undrafted during the 1981 NBA draft, Mills initially serving a position as manager of new business development for Chemical Bank. After having earned an offer to play professionally in Ecuador, Chemical agreed to hold the position for Mills until he joined the bank in 1982.
Executive career
For over sixteen years since 1984, he worked for the National Basketball Association, and prevously had worked at Chemical Bank. Mills’ ascension while at the NBA was notable. He as well served as was an account executive in the corporate sponsorship department of NBA properties and program manager for NBA properties.
He as well served as the vice-president of special events,and later served as a senior vice-president of Basketball and Player Development, he later served as the Chief operating officer and Sports Business President of Madison Square Garden in 2003.
At MSG he supervised day-to-day operations, including finances, business strategies of the NBA’s New York Knicks, NHL’s New York Rangers, and the WNBA’s New York Liberty. Including all sports-related activities where he took jurisdiction, like boxing, college basketball, and track & field.
He later left MSG in 2009 and to start working with Magic Johnson Enterprises where he aid in creating the Athletes & Entertainers Wealth Management Group, LLC (A&E). of which he was a partner.
The New York Knicks announced on September 26, 2013, that Mills would be the executive vice president and general manager of the organization.
After the announcement that, on July 14, 2017, Scott Perry would serve as the Knicks’ newest general manager, the Knicks also announced he would take the position as the new president of the organization, replacing the role that was previously held by Phil Jackson.
