As a junior, Taylor led his basketball team to the Class A Final Four, losing 59-46 in the state finals to the Champion Saginaw High School semifinals. He got 22 points.

After graduating from high school, he accepted the basketball offer from Northwood University. He stayed on campus for a semester and played 7 games, averaging 2.6 rebounds, 1.9 points and 1.4 assists per game.

During the first practice of training camp in August 2017, Taylor broke his left foot. He was cleared to return on October 7 against Ohio State, where he had a career-high 10 catches for 136 yards and two scores in a 26–23 victory.
