Derrin Horton Career

On weeknights, Horton anchors sports coverage for KLTA 5 News at 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 10 p.m., and 11 p.m., as well as L.A.’s No. 1 “Sports Final” broadcast at 10:45 p.m. Horton, has worked with several of America’s biggest sports networks as a host, anchor, reporter, and play-by-play announcer. Over the past 22 years, Horton has hosted a number of NFL Network studio shows, including “NFL Total Access,” “Point After,” “College Football Now,” and “Road to the Draft .”

He spent the previous five years at KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, where he was the main feature reporter for Channel 9’s coverage of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team and anchored “Sports Central .” One of his genuine passions is telling stories, and while at KCAL, Horton received an Emmy for his coverage of the Special Olympics.

After Syracuse, Horton started his professional career as a radio broadcaster for WHBC-AM in Canton, Ohio. He traveled to Greensboro, N.C., six months later to host “Black College Sports Today,” and Winston-Salem, N.C.’s WXII-TV, where he covered Wake Forest, Duke, UNC, and NC State football and basketball, as well as the NASCAR circuit. Horton packed his belongings and moved to the Midwest to anchor weekend sports for WLWT-TV, the NBC affiliate in Cincinnati, after spending two years in North Carolina. Then it was on to Fox affiliate WFLD-TV in Chicago, where he hosted all of the Chicago Bears programmings and covered Michael Jordan’s return to the Bulls.

In September 1998, Horton relocated to Los Angeles and started working as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports Net’s Conference USA kit. As a play-by-play announcer for ESPN, he later started calling college football and basketball games. He’s worked as a sideline reporter for CBS Sports and called games for ABC Sports, NFL Network, and Fox Sports Net’s coverage of NFL Europe.
