Hugh Glass leads Captain Andrew Henry’s trappers into the present-day Dakota Territory in late 1823 . While he and his half-Pawnee son , Hawk , are hunting , an Arikara war party attacks the company’s camp , hoping to reclaim their Chief’s abducted daughter , Powaqa . During the conflict , many of the trappers are slain , while the rest flee on a boat . The survivors are led by Glass on foot to Fort Kiowa since he fears that traveling downriver will expose them to danger . The crew stores the pelts on the shore after docking .

Saul vows to never attend a residential school , but his Christian parents are adamant that their firstborn son will go to paradise . When the boy passes away from his illness , they carry him away to be blessed by a priest , leaving Saul with his grandmother deep in the woods . The parents don’t show up .
