Jawan Strader Biography

Jawan Strader is an Emmy-winning American journalist who currently works as a host and anchor at NBC 6. He joins NBC 6 News with Jackie Nespral every week at 5pm, 6pm and 11pm. Strader also hosts The Voice with Jawan Strader, a community program focusing on the black community and underrepresented groups.

Jarwan is a well-known journalist in South Florida. He has more than 20 years of journalism experience as a news anchor, covering some of the biggest and most impactful stories in South Florida and across the country.

Jawan knows how to get to the heart of breaking news, especially as it affects South Florida. Strader won the 2018 Emmy Award for his work covering the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy and the Hollywood Hills nursing home disaster that left 12 seniors dead in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

Jawan is also the only news source in South Florida, where the shooting at a church in Charleston, South Carolina took place. The day after the horrific Pulse nightclub shooting, Strader was in Orlando to talk to the victims and share their stories with viewers. He also traveled to Havana, Cuba, to cover former President Barack Obama’s historic visit.

Jawan is from Indianapolis, Indiana but has lived in South Florida for the past ten years. His work has taken him from South Bend, Indiana to Tulsa, Austin, Washington, DC, Cleveland and Miami.

Strader earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communications from Indiana University. He joined WTVJ/NBC 6 in 2012. Jawan was previously working as a host on the local CBS station’s 10pm show. an anchor, a morning anchor and hosting a community event.
