Malik’s college career began at Copiah Lincoln Community College. In 17 games over two seasons, Heath caught seven touchdowns and 61 passes for 835 yards. He transferred to Mississippi State University after his senior year. On August 12, 2020, before playing for Mississippi State, he was charged with driving without insurance, license or equipment, speeding and driving under the influence.

In his first season at Mississippi State, he caught 37 passes for 307 yards and 3 touchdowns. Malik was involved in an altercation during the 2020 Armed Forces Bowl that included him kicking Tulsa defensive back TieNeal Martin. Malik boasted about this on social media after the match and received backlash.

In 2021, Malik caught 34 passes for 442 yards and five touchdowns. Malik was in a car accident in Mississippi on December 2, 2021, leaving him with broken ribs, two collapsed lungs, and a broken heart. On December 11, Malik scored his first NFL touchdown on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Love in a 22–24 loss to the New York Giants.
