Now, Uhuru Kenyatta is a member of the Jubilee Party of Kenya Party of Kenya and his support has gradually diminished. Before joining the United Republican Party, Kenyatta was associated with the Kenya African National Union (KANU) before forming the National Alliance (TNA), a coalition that fought against him in the 2013 general election. Led by William Ruto, the URP formed the Jubilee Party.

In the 1997 general election, Uhuru ran for the parliamentary seat in the South Gatundu constituency previously held by his father, but lost to Nairobi architect Moses Mwihia. In 1999, Moi appointed Uhuru as chairman of the Parastatal Kenya Tourism Board. He was elected as a member of parliament in 2001 and joined the cabinet as Minister of Local Government. Later, he was also elected as KANU First Vice President.

In January 2005, Uhuru Kenyatta defeated Nicholas Biwott for the KANU presidency, with delegates casting 2,980 votes against Biwott (622 votes). Before becoming president, Kenyatta was listed as a terrorist against humanity by International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo for planning and financing violence in Naivasha and Nakuru.

On March 9, 2018, Kenyatta approved the dismissal of opposition leader Raila Odinga. The operation marked a turning point in the reform of the country’s political architecture. Uhuru Kenyatta inaugurated the Building Bridge Iniciative (BBI) in Bomas, Kenya on 27 November 2019. This is one of the results of the campaign with opposition leader Raila Odinga, as its implementation will lead to some changes in the Kenyan constitution.
